Blog Journal #3
1) Copyright is the legal right and ownership of one company or business to recreate and copy the work that was produced. When a person places copyright behind their logo or business, it's telling society that they are not allowed to ever duplicate the work because it isn't their work. Fair use is having certain situations where individuals are allowed to utilize and copy the work of businesses for informative or critical reasons. For example, the news may copy the work of an individual on live tv to make others aware of something within it or a talk show may copy the work of an individual to make humor of their situation. As a teacher, I would definitely begin to teach my young students the idea of copying and how important it is to keep their eyes on their own paper. Since I really want to teach kindergarteners, the actual concept "copyright" is alot for children that young to understand so I would just remind everyone to keep their eyes on their own paper and not to copy what their neighbor is doing. As a teacher, I must also be accountable and make sure that every creative idea I see online isn't meant to take and I have to be authentic and come up with my own class activities often.
2) The two technology implementation issues that I want to discuss are academic dishonesty and decreased productivity. Academic dishonesty is something that is very present for students who have access to a computer both in and out of class. Now with students as young as 6-7 years old, they don't quite now how to look up answers to their easy homework but they do know how to look at their neighbors screen. To eliminate this activity dishonesty, I would place folders between each computer in my kids technology area in our classroom or the computer lab. Also, because young learners find a lot of comfort in visual learning, I would place pictures on the wall of students displaying academic dishonesty on spelling tests, worksheets and the computer so they can constantly see and remember not to let their eyes wander. Decreased productivity creates a positive relationship between using technology and being prone to get less work done. It is very easy for students to get distracted with games on the computer and allow the accessibility of technology to take place of their effort. In my classroom, I would make any assignment that we have to complete online a friendly competition or reward students for how well and productive they are. Really young students love to be the best or first to do anything so they'll be extra productive if they know being a winner or receiving a treat is at the end.
3) I gained so many skills by doing the newsletter design and realized how little I really knew about Microsoft at all! I was having such a hard time writing on both sides of the document and I found myself so discouraged because I thought it was common sense. The newsletter taught me how to columns and split the document in half so that I could type on both sides. Also, I learned how to insert shapes, shade and use word art which were all things I saw before but never tried myself. In my future newsletter, I could improve in how much empty space I had because I don't fully know how to pack things closer together with spacing and everything. I could improve my newsletter in the future by doing better with overall layout and the overall appearance of the design. The skills I learned can be used in my future teaching career because now I have an idea of creating one without a template. Doing this newsletter also taught me how to create permission slips which I definitely will use in my future classes for all field trips and class activities. Overall, this was a fun challenge to do and I really liked the experience.
